One of the more recent efforts towards our Time for Trees goals is a collaboration called #TeamTrees which was established by Mark Rober and MrBeast – both well-known YouTube influencers. By this time, you’ve probably seen the success of #TeamTrees. If you haven’t, check more out here and here.
“Team Trees” was launched on October 25th with MrBeast setting a goal to plant 20 million trees by 2020 and challenging more than 600 other YouTube influencers to join#TeamTrees by creating video content about the effort. It has now become the largest YouTube collaboration ever. In fact, over the past few weeks, the effort has raised funds to plant nearly 18 million trees. The magnitude and pace of the success of this effort is unlike anything we’ve ever seen As of this note, more than 500,000 people have donated towards this effort including the likes of Elon Musk, Marc Benioff, Susan Wojcicki, and Jimmy Elrod who donated his $1 of tooth fairy money to plant one tree.
The Arbor Day Foundation is excited to be a part of something that young people (the followers of these influencers) think is so important. Hundreds of thousands of youth are contributing to this effort. There are so many times we hope for an opportunity to have an intergenerational conversation about how we can affect positive change … how we should invest in our collective future. These young people are making a loud statement. They want to know that we’re listening.
While this has been exciting, enthralling, inspiring, etc., it has not necessarily been surprising to us here at the Arbor Day Foundation or over at#TeamTrees for two reasons: trees resonate with so many people and passionate partnerships prevail.
Trees Resonate: People get tree planting. Trees are a simple solution to very complex, pressing challenges that our planet faces. Without diminishing the immense challenges ahead for our planet, the Arbor Day Foundation aims to provide avenues for tangible, measurable, concrete climate (energy, water, habitat, air quality, etc.) action at scale to all who want to be involved.
Passionate Partnerships Prevail: When MrBeast (Jimmy) made the crazy commitment to plant 20 million trees in honor of his 20 million YouTube subscribers, he recognized that he could not do that alone. Over several months, as Jimmy and fellow-YouTuber Mark Rober worked to build a coalition of hundreds of the most influential influencers, the Arbor Day Foundation began the work of preparing to orchestrate the planting of 20 million trees across six continents. This bold, broad, coordinated, simple call to action paired with the Arbor Day Foundation’s tree-planting know-how posed to be a winning combination—but not a new one. No single government, person, NGO, strategy, can solve these enormous global issues alone. Instead, partnerships will always prevail. (It also helps when your partners have a combined 600+ million followers to get the word out.)
While#TeamTrees is our only partnership that has inspired one of the most famous inventors to change his name to “Treelon” Musk on Twitter, it is one of the hundreds of transformational partnerships that the Arbor Day Foundation has forged over the last five decades. We are always looking for the opportunity to explore new and innovative collaborations that will create a more healthy and thriving planet for future generations.
Over the next few weeks we anticipate hitting the 20 million tree goal. We invite you to look for#TeamTrees news and share it with your friends, family, and your network. The young people who are supporting this effort are so excited to be part of something larger than themselves. But, more important, they are excited to be leading – to have their parents, grandparents, teachers, and mentors interested in something they are excited about. They are excited that they are having an impact. If you are on social media, help us spread the word.
And if you are interested in being part of the biggest YouTube collaboration, you can donate at #TeamTrees. I’d also be happy to help you come up with creative ways of maximizing your gift and its impact.
Here is a video from MrBeast that explains how this all started.
Thanks for your continued interest in Time for Trees.
