First Quarterly Education Program and State Arbor Day Event
At our February 20th First Quarter Program and State Arbor Day Event, we're talking about tree equity and providing the benefits of a healthy urban forest for under-resourced communities.
Cassandra Johnson Gaither, Research Social Scientist with the US Forest Service, will be speaking on her project concerning trees and greenspace in older, intown communities, many with rental homes owned by absentee property-owners and corporations, which limits and changes the relationship that the actual residents have with their trees. This is a first integral step in addressing the care and maintenance of existing and often, aging, tree canopy in these areas.
Athens Clarke County Community Forestry Coordinator Mateo Fennell will share insights on how Athens Clarke County Government handles urban forestry maintenance in neighborhoods with an abundance of rental properties, ensuring the canopy is safe and managed.
At noon, we'll provide lunch for attendees and present the State Arbor Day Event, when we honor and recognize the Tree City Communities, Tree Campus Colleges and Universities, and Tree Line Utilities in attendance.
Finally, after lunch, we'll have a panel of Georgia ReLeaf and Trees Across Georgia grant recipients, who will share their projects that bring tree plantings to under-resourced, under-served areas of their communities.
